The sun shone brightly in Donegal Town for the launch of Bike Week Donegal which took place at the Public Services Centre in Donegal Town on Thursday 11/06/2015.
Chairman of Donegal County Council, Cllr John Campbell in what is one of his remaining functions as Chairman launched the week long programme of cycle related activities which take place between the 13th and 21st June.
The gathering included teachers and senior class children from Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala, Gaelscoil na Ceithre Maistirí and the Glebe Primary in Donegal Town as well as fellow Councillor and Donegal Sports Partnership Director Tom Conaghan, Directors Of Donegal Sports Partnership Colin Mc Nulty and Eamon Harvey.
Cllr Campbell welcomed the large turnout and thanked programme coordinators Donegal Sports Partnership and Donegal County Council and all the local community groups, schools and cycling clubs for their efforts to promote safe cycling and cycling as a sport.
He hoped that the pleasant weather would encourage many more to dust down their cycle and participate in one of the many events organised during the Bike Week 2015 or to just go out and enjoy the many benefits cycling has to offer including getting some fresh air, some exercise or just having fun with some friends.
He stressed the importance of safety when cycling on public roads as cyclists have to share with walkers and cars.
He then invited everyone with a bike to join him in a lunchtime cycle to the Diamond in Donegal Town and back to the Public Services Centre and thanked the Gardaí of Donegal Town for their support in traffic management for the event.
National Bike Week 2015 is a national programme supported by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and coordinated locally by Donegal Sports Partnership with the assistance of Donegal County Council.
