Enniskillen to Host the All Ireland Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Championship

Fermanagh County Show hosts the All Ireland Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Championship at Enniskillen this year. Exhibitors are already planning to travel from Cork and Wicklow in a bid to win this prestigious championship with the biggest trophy ever seen in livestock circles. At the recent Show launch, Alan Morrison who is a council member of the Irish Aberdeen Angus Society and Society President, Louis Byrne explained that the Aberdeen Angus is a breed which has established itself as the second most popular beef breed sire and the most popular native beef breed sire in the UK.

It is also one of only two mainstream beef breeds which have seen an increase in BCMS calf registrations from 2011 to 2012. The increasing popularity of the Aberdeen Angus is attributed to its reputation for the economic, low cost production of quality beef due to its ability to finish on forage based diets and to thrive in all parts of the UK and Ireland. It is a breed which is popular in both the beef and dairy industries as a sire due to its ease of calving and ability to attain premium prices both in the prime and store ring.

The beef produced from the Aberdeen Angus is characteristically marbled which ensures tenderness, juiciness and flavour when cooked. Aberdeen Angus producers also have the advantage of genomic testing which had previously been only used for research. They are able to use it to obtain more information about an animal’s genetic potential especially for economically important traits such as marbling, feed efficiency and average daily gain which affect management and breeding decisions.

Entries close this Monday, July 15.
