A major cull of badgers over the past year and a half has led to a drop in Bovine Tuberculosis rates in Donegal.
It is understood that hundreds of badgers have been removed from south and south west Donegal.
Badgers are a protected species but the Department of Agriculture can apply to the National Parks and Wildlife Services for a licence to remove them.
However, while there have been major culls in parts of Donegal and Monaghan – where Bovine TB rates were also high – there has not been any cull in Northern Ireland.
“Badgers don’t take any notice of the border,” one farmer commented.
