The MED Annual Autumn Cattle Sale took place at Ballyshannon Mart on Wednesday October 3rd 2012. Approx. 75 AI progeny were offered for sale by MED members. Trade was brisk and prices were good. Numbers were down on 2011, as Bovine TB is a problem in the locality, and as a result some farms are quarantined.
Over 70 calves were sold. As previously stated the sale was badly hit by the quarantine restrictions on some MED members farms due to a Bovine TB outbreak. At least another 50 calves were due to present in the sale.
Sale Averages:
Bull Calves: 376kgs average weight and achieved €820.00 average price. – 445 over the weight.
Heifer Calves: 389kgs average weight and achieved €854.00 average price – 465 over the weight.
Surprisingly heifer calves outperformed bull calves at the sale.
MED member Neville Myles deserves a special mention on the quality of the heifer calves he brought to the sale. One of his heifer calves achieved the top price prize weighing in at 505kgs and selling for €1215.00.
S&M Donagher achieved the top price for a Bull Calf weighing in at 490kgs and selling for €1100.00.
Even though numbers were down, all who attended agreed it was a good sale and were very happy at the prices achieved.
