My Farming Week – Emmet Mc Nulty – 04/06/2012
My name is Emmet Mc Nulty and I farm at Gortlee, which is between Belleek and Garrison in Co. Fermanagh. My home farm is approx 30 acres and I have approx 40 acres taken.
I have a suckler herd of 26 animals, of which half are pedigree. I specialise in Beef Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus.
Calving is in progress at the minute and as you can imagine I am busy.
I re-seeded most of my grassland last year and as a result I am foregoing this task this year.
I was a member of the MED “Gate to Plate” project a few years ago and I found it excellent in promoting farm improvement. I made investments in the farm which I would otherwise have put off e.g. extension to cattle sheds, crush gates and pens. I even indulged in a few luxuries like CCTV for the calving shed. I also added to my pedigree stock, with a sense of confidence after completing the MED Stock Selection course. This emphasis on quality has produced results and I recently (February 2012) sold a bull for €2,200.00 in Carrick onShannon.
I am busy preparing four pedigree bulls for sale in Carrick on Shannon. The vet has completed testing, cleaning and grooming remain to be done.
