My Farming Week—— Pat Johnston —- 14/03/2012
Hello all,
I am a part time farmer with a small suckler herd, mainly continental cross cows and use 100% AI on all cows and heifers.
Spring calving has started this week (had my first Snoopy calf this week). Happy enough with the calf.
I spend a lot of my time keeping an eye on the cows coming to calve and making sure the calf sucks etc when born, although my better half does this when I am at work.
Hope to get slurry mixed and out this week coming if ground conditions improve, had this job done this time last year.
Autumn born calves grazing silage ground in daytime, I intend to scan the autumn calvers this coming week, I have spent some time and energy focusing on my calving interval, like to keep it as close to 365 days as I can.
Tidied up the last of the hedge cuttings I had cut before the closed period started but hadn’t got round to finishing them
Just finished my winter project this week as well, tidied up my tractor and I am very pleased with the result.
