Tom Hayes, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for forestry, today announced that Teagasc will hold a nationwide series of free forestry advisory clinics for people who are considering forestry or who are existing forest owners.
The advisory clinics, which are organised by Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department and supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, will offer one-to-one consultations with Teagasc forestry advisors. There will be 39 clinics in total and they will be held around the country between January 20th and 31st.
Minister Hayes said: “I believe that forestry is a viable land use option for many farmers and the strong demand for appointments at last year’s advisory clinics indicates the extent of interest among farmers and land owners in afforestation.”
The advisory clinics are also open to existing forest owners who may wish to discuss forest management issues or obtain practical advice on management, thinning and marketing timber.
As the clinics involve a one-to-one discussion with a Teagasc forestry development officer, anyone interested in attending must make an appointment in advance. Contact your local Teagasc office as soon as possible to arrange a suitable time.
Minister Hayes said: “For anyone who is considering forestry as an option on their farm, these free advisory clinics present an ideal opportunity to obtain independent and objective advice on how forestry might fit in with your farm enterprise”.
Please note that the Donegal Clinic takes place in the TEAGASC Offices in Ballybofey, Co. Donegal, on Thursday, January 23rd 2014. Please ring 074 9131189 to arrange an appointment.

A nationwide series of 38 forestry clinics for people who are considering planting forestry on the farm has been organised by Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department.
Two of these clinics will take place in the North west with one in Donegal and one in the Sligo/Leitrim area.
A clinic will be held in Ballybofey at the Teagasc Office. For more information call 074 9131189.
The Leitrim / Sligo clinic will take place at the Mohill Teagasc office and can be contacted on 071 9631076
Dr. Nuala Ni Fhlatharta, head of Teagasc’s Forestry Development Department said: “The first step in making an informed decision on forestry as an enterprise is to become familiar with the issues involved. Planting land can have many attractions, but you need to know if it is appropriate for you. Teagasc can provide the information, experience and advice necessary to assist in the decision making process.”
Farmers and landowners considering the merits of a forestry enterprise are invited to attend these free clinics in local Teagasc offices throughout the country. They will provide a great opportunity to avail of a one-to-one consultation with an experienced Teagasc forestry adviser.
Clinics will take place between 10am and 4pm. Prior booking is essential.
