Postcodes To Benefit Rural Residents Despite Teething Problems

Eircode encounters initial problems but promises long-term benefits for rural residents. Over 2.2 million households and businesses will receive notification of their new postcode, following the launch of the €27 million Eircode system on Monday. The postcodes, which are being distributed this week and next will give a unique seven-digit code to each household nationwide, making it easier to locate and identify non-unique addresses.

Eircode was launched by Communications Minister Alex White on Monday.

Launching the system, Minister for Communications Alex White TD said, “A wide range of services will be delivered more efficiently while reducing costs.” Most importantly for rural residents, the Minister highlighted that “emergency services will be able to find the correct address more quickly, particularly in rural areas.”

Furthermore, as 35% of households in Ireland share their address – especially on country roads without specific house numbers – it means better delivery of post and easier identification of houses. Ordering online will also be simpler as postcodes are required by many international websites. As Ireland is the last country within Europe to introduce postcodes, it is now considered not just beneficial but necessary.

Over 80,000 people accessed Eircode’s website within  the first three hours of the launch. However, there were complaints almost immediately as the addresses for many homes and businesses were incorrect. ShannonAirport, for example, appears to have an address in Limerick rather than Clare, while the townland of Farranfore is found to be in Killarney, although there are 16km separating the two towns.

Minister White assured: “There will be no change whatsoever to anybody’s address.” The Minister’s office further clarified to the Irish Farmers Journal that many addresses are presented in a way that includes the main hub through which a recipient’s post is routed, but addresses will stay the same as before.
