A septic tank grant scheme has been announced by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Phil Hogan.
The grant will provide assistance for householders whose septic tanks require remediation following inspection.
Grants will only apply where a domestic waste water treatment system failed an inspection carried out under the 2012 legislation. The treatment system must have been registered by the due date of February 1, 2013.
The announcement of the scheme has been welcomed by Donegal County Council.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said: “This inspection system will be of huge benefit to householders, their families and neighbours as it will address any risk to public health and the environment caused by malfunctioning systems. Ensuring clean and safe water will have a positive impact on local tourism, agricultural and food producing sectors.”
Inspections will include checks for risks to public health through leakage or discharge to ground surface or nearby ditches. Checks will also ensure regulations regarding roof water, surface water and grey water are complied with fully.
Householders will be given advance notice of inspections. Inspectors will be required to carry identification and to present this on request by householders.
Information leaflets are available through local authority offices, libraries and Citizens Information Centres.
Registration remains open and people liable to register are advised to do so as soon as possible. Anyone wishing to register can do so at their local authority office or at www.protectourwater.ie.
