The Rural Enterprise Skillnet weanling weighing demonstration and training event was held on John Barron’s farm outside Ballyshannon earlier this week.
28 spring born weanlings were weighed under the ICBF weight recording service, provided by local ICBF agent William Scott.
It is a prerequisite that herd owners are registered for Herd Plus to avail of this service.
When the weanlings are weighed the agent provides an instant print out of weight which outlines the weanling performance from birth. It further provided predicted 30 day weight and 90 day predicted weight. This is invaluable information for the producer and can be used as aid for dosing, for detecting poor mothering ability and breed performance.
It is definitely worth consideration as an aid for improved efficiency.
William then outlined his own herd and his focus on profit performance which left the group with much food for thought.
